A Few Things Worth Knowing
These are the questions we hear most from couples before booking, everything from how we work to what to expect on your wedding day. If you’re searching for a wedding photographer in Colorado, the Mountain West and beyond, and you want to know if we’re the right fit, this is a good place to start. If something isn’t answered here, reach out. We’d rather talk than have you wonder.
What is your photography style?
A wedding day doesn’t call for one style, it calls for range. Sarah Porter Photography leans candid and editorial, with a fine art sensibility woven through. The result is a gallery that moves: quiet in-between moments alongside images with real visual intention. Underlying all of it is a technique called invisible directing, a way of guiding couples so naturally through their day that the camera disappears entirely. More on that below.
How much does wedding photography cost?
Wedding photography at Sarah Porter Photography is custom quoted. Every wedding is different: the events, the locations, the hours, the team. Pricing should reflect your day, not a package pulled off a shelf. The best first step is a conversation. Reach out and we’ll talk through what you’re envisioning.
Will you personally photograph my wedding?
Sarah Porter photographs a select number of weddings each year herself. She also works with two carefully chosen lead photographers, Chua and Cristin, who shoot under the same eye and the same standard. Different photographers, one shared approach: reading a room before the moment happens, taking the time to actually understand you before the wedding day ever arrives, and knowing when to step forward and give direction and when to step back and let the moment breathe. You’ll always know who is photographing your wedding before you book — and why they’re the right fit for your day.
How many photos will I receive, and when?
Galleries are curated around what we believe you’ll want to see, we don’t work off an image count. If it’s a moment worth keeping, it’s in. Our galleries are robust but never bloated: the full story of your day without filler. Most galleries are delivered within 6–8 weeks, with a sneak peek in your inbox within the first week.
How many hours of coverage do I need?
Weddings are not created equal, coverage can vary wildly depending on cultural customs, multiple locations, and the shape of your day. We rarely see less than 9 hours and often go up to 14. There’s no minimum requirement, and when you book with Sarah directly, full-day coverage is always an option. We’ll talk through what actually makes sense for your day rather than defaulting to a number.
Do you travel for destination weddings?
As a wedding photographer in the Mountain West, we’re based in Colorado and Texas but photograph weddings throughout the United States, Europe, and beyond. For the right wedding, anywhere is on the table. And while our aesthetic is rooted in the American West, we’re equally at home on an Amalfi cliffside or a French château terrace, the work doesn’t change with the coordinates.
What is “invisible directing,” and why does it matter?
Most “candid” photos aren’t accidental. They’re the result of direction so natural you never felt it happen. On a wedding day, nerves are real, couples who are completely themselves at the rehearsal dinner sometimes freeze the moment a lens appears. Invisible directing dissolves that. It’s intentional placement, a well-timed prompt, and knowing exactly when to step back and let the moment breathe. The best images almost always come in the second after direction ends, when you’ve forgotten the camera exists. That’s the whole approach.
How do I feel comfortable in front of a camera on my wedding day?
Most people aren’t used to being photographed for 10 hours. The good news: you won’t feel like it. Feeling comfortable in front of a camera isn’t really about confidence, it’s about having a photographer who reads the room, steps in with the right prompt at the right moment, and never leaves you wondering what to do with your hands. We all want candid photos. We also want to look good in them. That tension is exactly what invisible directing solves. You show up, you’re present with your partner, and we handle the rest. Where to stand, when to move, how to fill a moment, that’s never your job.
Do you have backup equipment and a contingency plan?
Every shoot is backed by redundant camera bodies, lenses, and memory cards that dual-record on capture. Gear fails, preparedness is the antidote.
What should I look for when hiring a wedding photographer?
Hiring a wedding photographer in the Mountain West — or anywhere — comes down to one thing: You’ll feel it. Look for someone who puts you at ease before a camera ever appears — someone who plays off your energy, reads you and your partner, and guides you in a way that feels like you, not like a pose. Always ask to see a full gallery or two, not just portfolio highlights. And if you scroll through their work thinking I wish I could look that way on camera — that’s your person. Because here’s the truth: we are everyday people photographing everyday people, and the right photographer will find more depth and beauty in front of the lens than you ever thought possible.
What should my photographer know about shooting in the Mountain West?
Altitude! Altitude sickness is a very really thing and knowing if your photographer is able to adapt is important. Mountain west weddings often happen at 8,000 to 12,000 feet, where the air is thinner, the light is extraordinary, and the physical demands of a full wedding day are amplified. The last thing you should be thinking about on your wedding day is whether your photographer is managing the altitude rather than being fully present. An acclimated photographer moves with ease, stays sharp from ceremony through the last dance, and knows how to work with high-altitude light, the way it falls, the way it shifts, the gold it produces at elevation. Reading the weather and familiarity with weather patterns and when the mountain is safe and unsafe is another larger topic. As a wedding photographer in the Mountain West, the mountains are our terrain, the altitude and weather is something we plan around, not something we’re quietly managing.
Kind words
“While I struggle to find my “favorite” part of my wedding, Sarah was the best unexpected favorite part of my entire wedding experience from our engagement photo shoot until our wedding.
I, naively, did not realize what a big part of your day
your photographer was until I met Sarah. Our engagement pictures was the first time we had been professionally photographed and we were clueless and my husband was nervous- we had the BEST time and Sarah was simply perfect. Because of that, we had a real relationship with her on our
wedding day and it was absolutely invaluable. Sarah is one of the most kind hearted, hard working, fun loving and impressive people I met in the business.”
